Eldora Mountain began snowmaking Oct. 24 in preparation for a new ski season.

Supporting the community around the Eldora ski resort is important to the business, said Marketing Director Sam Bass. This year the ski resort will support the community of the past while caring for its neighbor.

When the pandemic began, Eldora began its Play Forever Fund in an effort to support nonprofits in the Nederland community. Its efforts made it possible for local nonprofits to continue helping those most in need with food, rent and utility assistance.

This year Eldora decided to commit dollars to the sustainability promise of the Play Forever Fund.

It identified two nonprofits — the Indian Peaks Wilderness Alliance and the Native American Rights Fund.

The Indian Peaks Wilderness Alliance is dedicated to protecting the Indian Peaks and the James Peaks wilderness areas. These wilderness areas neighbor Eldora and due its close proximity sees a lot of use.

Bass said Eldora recognizes that the land the resort rests on once belonged to the Ute, Arapaho and Cheyenne native tribes.

“Eldora acknowledges that fact, and we want to make a meaningful contribution to improving the lives of Native People in Colorado and beyond,” Bass said.

The Native American Rights Fund is based in Boulder but operates nationally and has the mission of “protecting Native American rights, resources, and lifeways through litigation, legal advocacy, and legal expertise.”

Eldora is encouraging patrons to the ski resort to contribute to the Play Forever Fund by promising to match the contributions up to $10,000. The funds will be equally distributed between the two nonprofit organizations.
