At least 17 signalized and “high crash” intersections  in Longmont will be improved under a $895,400 program approved by the Longmont City Council Tuesday night.

Council members voted unanimously for the upgrades. Of the total cost, $805,860 will be paid for through federal funds. The city will pay the 10% local match, or $89,540, according to a city staff report.

All the intersections identified in the project are high crash locations in the city based on five-year data analysis from 2015 to 2019, according to the city report. Improvements include the installation of signal head back plates, flashing yellow arrow signal heads for left turn lanes and replacement of existing eight-inch signal indications with 12-inch indications, the report states.

Three of the 17 intersections — Ninth Avenue and Francis Street, Ninth Avenue and Kimbark Stree, and Mountain View and Francis Street — will get signal pole and mast arm replacements, the staff report states.

Work on the intersections is scheduled to be finished by July 2023, according to a city staff report.
