Christmas came and families exchanged carefully wrapped gifts around trees decorated in glowing lights, some of those trees were real. Now that the big day is over, it is time to start thinking about cleaning up. The city of Longmont offers green solutions for holiday decorations.

Nowcut tre through Jan. 9, the city of Longmont offers recycling for holiday materials, according to a Facebook post

There are five city-sponsored locations, Roosevelt, Garden Acres, Kanemoto and Centennial parks and the Waste Diversion Center where holiday trees and live decorations can be disposed of.

According to the city of Longmont website, most of the trees will be ground into mulch which will be available to residents. However, a small number of the trees will be placed in city lakes and nature areas to serve as fish habitats.

The Waste Diversion Center will also have special bins to accept wrapping paper, holiday lights and white block foam for recycling.

The white foam recycling bins must be taken beyond the fence at the Waste Diversion Center. Individuals will need to bring a current city of Longmont utility bill and ID indicating residency in Longmont.

This year wrapping paper can also be deposited in your curbside recycling bin. Plastic, mylar ribbons and bows cannot be put in the curbside bins, according to the city of Longmont website.

Cardboard, too, can be recycled either in the curbside bin or taken to the Waste Diversion Center. Heavily taped cardboard should be put in the trash, the website states.

For other items that may need to be recycled during the holidays, Eco-Cycle put together a guide.
