The Longmont Climate Community will present part two of a three-part series on air quality data, how it affects health in the city and what residents can do to improve local air quality, during a Zoom event, Aug. 5 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Those interested can register or email [email protected].

Dr. Cory Caroll, from Physicians for Social Responsibly and Dr. Lisa McKenzie, PhD, MPH from the CU Cancer Center and a clinical assistant professor in the Colorado School of Public Health Department of Environmental & Occupational Health will talk about the results of research concerning the effects of deadly chemicals and toxins released by fracking and oil and gas activity, according to a news release.

McKenzie recently completed a pilot study of childhood leukemia patients living near Colorado’s oil and gas drilling sites which recently led to an American Cancer Society grant award, the news release states. For the pilot study, which was partially funded by the CU Cancer Center, McKenzie, used the Colorado Central Cancer Registry to compare children diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia — a type of blood cancer — to children diagnosed with other types of cancer, the news release states.

Part 3 of the series will include a panel discussion about how residents can collectively change the current situation and will be scheduled for late September 2021.
