The City Council in Longmont voted unanimously in the October 8th regular session to declare a climate emergency.
A large contingent of over a dozen supporters, including several high school student supporters of Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old Swedish climate activist, spoke at Public Invited To Be Heard. Several of them read from Thunberg's United Nations Speach from last month. No one spoke against the resolution.
The resolution, proposed in July by Longmont environmental activists, has Longmont putting together a climate working group that will "discuss further steps the city should take to promote a carbon-free sustainable city with the goal of creating and submitting a report outlining such steps within 120 of this resolution..."
City staff was directed to recruit members of the working group, which will be made up of city staff, subject matter experts, and concerned residents with the goal of getting it up and running as soon as possible.
