Longmont United Hospital and the Longmont Area Chamber of Commerce have united to donate $1,500 to Longmont Food Rescue, a nonprofit that reclaims and redistributes nutritious food directly to low-income populations.
The Longmont Chamber collaborated with Longmont Food Rescue on their largest annual fundraiser, the “Food Truck Cup,” in 2019. Despite COVID-19 forcing the closure of the 2020 event, the organization continued to grow to meet the increased need for food resources in Longmont, according to a Longmont Area Chamber of Commerce news release.
“In 2020, we added six new recipient sites, and distributed no-cost groceries at a total of twelve low-income communities that include sites that primarily serve families, as well as living facilities for low-income, elderly sick, or disabled residents,” Naomi Curland, executive director or Longmont Food Rescue, said in the news release, “and that’s just the start of what we’ve been able to accomplish with our incredible volunteers. It was a challenging expansion, but it is so important to us that all residents of our community have access to healthy food.”
Supporting an organization that redistributes resources to keep the Longmont community fed and healthy was an easy decision for Longmont United Hospital, the news release states. “We have a deep connection to this community and have been treating Longmont citizens for more than 60 years,” said Tina Johnson, MD, CEO of Longmont United Hospital, in the news release. “The mission and accomplishments of Longmont Food Rescue align perfectly with our mission to keep those in our community healthy in body, mind, and spirit.”
Longmont Food Rescue was also recognized as a finalist for the Nonprofit of the Year 2020 award for the Longmont Chamber and received a $1,000 donation to honor the tremendous work of the organization, the news release states.
