Longmont gearing up for holiday events

Turkey Trot and Longmont Lights return for the festive season

Longmont’s Thanksgiving and Christmas events are quickly approaching, and community members are invited to start planning for the festivities.

Registration is now open for the Longmont Turkey Trot on Nov. 12 at Altona Middle School. The trot includes a 10K starting at 9 a.m. and two mile run starting at 9:05 a.m., Recreation Program Coordinator Samantha Calhoon said.

This year’s theme is Willy Wonka and Chocolate Factory, so look out for the turkey dressed as the chocolatier this year.

Runners can register online at longmontcoor.gov/rec by clicking the shopping cart, then activities and searching the keyword “turkey.” Registration is also available in person at any Longmont Recreation facility.

Calhoon added that online registration closes noon on Nov. 10, but the in person registration will still be available at the packet pick-up on Nov. 11 at the Longmont Recreation Center as well as race day registration 7-8:30 a.m. at Altona.

New this year, those pre-registered for the race can join Longmont Rec’s tie dye party 4-6 p.m. on Thursday. Early shirt pick up for runners will be available there, but pre-registration is required at longmontcolorado.gov/rec.

Longmont Lights are just over a month away, with plenty of activities for families. The new lighting display in Roosevelt Park will be up from mid-November to mid-January, Calhoon said.

The Lights Festival will take place 5-8 p.m. on Dec. 9. Attendees can visit with Santa in the gym at the Longmont Senior Center and join in on Santa’s workshop crafts and more in the St. Vrain Memorial Building.

Fireworks will be at 7:45 p.m. and other attractions include fire pits, hot coco and open skate at the Longmont Ice Pavilion.

The Longmont Lights Parade will take place 5 p.m. the next day, Dec. 10. Locals can build and display holiday floats along the parade route on Coffman and Main Street.

Organizations are encouraged to enter a float into the parade with more details at longmontcolorado.gov/longmontlights. The application deadline is Dec. 5.
