Longmont City Council proclaimed April 22 Earth Day in the city, encouraging residents to celebrate the earth and recognize climate change as a challenge that needs solutions.

“This Earth Day is an active embodiment of commitment to ensuring everyone has a right to clean air, clean water and healthy lands,” Mayor Joan Peck read from the proclamation.

The proclamation on Tuesday was accepted by Karen Dike, chair of the Sustainable Resilient Longmont Earth Day Committee. She invited the community to the ninth annual Longmont Earth Day Celebration 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Timberline PK-8 School.

“SRL works on the premise that there is hope for the future of humanity and our amazing planet if we work together on solving global challenges on our local level,” Dike said.

The event will have agricultural education on how to improve soil and grow food while drawing carbon dioxide out of the air. Attendees can learn about sustainable fashion, try park mulching and cleanup opportunities and visit booths providing activities on how to live more sustainably.

There will also be upcycled arts and crafts projects, a treasure hunt, baby goats from Growing Gardens and more.

“Loving the Earth helps us protect the Earth,” Dike said.

The Longmont Earth Day Celebration has grown to be one of Boulder County’s biggest Earth Day events.
