The city of Longmont as well as the area’s beekeepers would like Longmonters to keep their lawn mowers in the garage all month and kick back to watch the grass grow.

The city council Tuesday night approved a proclamation making May 2022 “No Mow May” in Longmont, at the urging of the Boulder County Beekeepers Association. No Mow Day aims to encourage citizens to allow lawns to grow unmown for the entire month, creating important habitat and forage for early season pollinators, the proclamation states.

The BeeKeeper Association says that mowing lawns destroys nesting sites for key pollinators, like bees, and leads to other environmental problems.

In all, Americans should wean themselves of their addiction to lawns, said Susan Sommers, a Longmont resident and a beekeeper for eight years.

“We need to rethink the American lawn,” Sommers told the city council.

Sommers said she hoped all Longmont residents, including HOAs, would participate in No Mow May.
