Join us for this evening screening of M.C. Richards: The Fire Within, a deeply moving documentary film about one of the most visionary artist/philosophers of creativity in 20th century America. This hour-long film has won accolades from over a dozen film festivals worldwide including the Boulder International Film Festival. Famous for her stint as a professor at Black Mountain College, a collaborator of Creation Spirituality's Matthew Fox, for her work at Camphill Village teaching art to adults with developmental disabilities, and inspired by Rudolf Steiner's Anthroposophical and agricultural theories, this film and M.C. herself gives one goosebumps in our search to unearth our own creative spirits.
She first came into the public eye with her groundbreaking best-selling book Centering: In Pottery, Poetry and the Person, which started a cadre of followers. Jeffrey Beam of Oyster Boy Review says about M.C. in the film: "Folksy, quirky, pixie-like, dancing around her kitchen, moaning ecstatically while painting, potting, cooking, or teaching, she turns sage and brilliant observer of the human creative spark.... Richards' spirit is infectious, her luminosity nourishing, and her sense of humor and depth of feeling magnetic. This is one of the most important films about the practical power of art and spirituality I have ever seen."
The film will be presented and discussed by the film's producer, Melody Lewis-Kane and director Richard Kane. With them will be Deborah Haynes, a protege of M.C. Richards, who has authored eight books on art and spirituality including editing Opening Our Moral Eye, a book of essays and poems by M.C. Richards. Deborah is an Emeritus Professor of art history at CU Boulder and resides in Longmont, CO.
