Starting later this month Longmont patients can get medical marijuana brought to their doorsteps after city council on Tuesday night approved an ordinance that allows both local and state dispensaries to make deliveries.

Council members had no comment before unanimously approving the ordinance. It was amended in September to let state-licensed dispensaries make local deliveries.

The ordinance, which does not allow the delivery of recreational pot, is slated to take effect Oct. 26.

Kristen Thompson, a representative for The Green Solution, objected to outside dispensaries making local deliveries, saying those businesses don’t have to meet the same storefront requirements as Longmont dispensaries.

The city would be setting a bad precedent should Longmont agree to make recreational pot deliveries legal, Thompson said. The Green Solution, which has a dispensary at 206 S. Main St.,  is licensed by Longmont to sell recreational pot but it does not have a medical marijuana license.

“We do oppose businesses outside of Longmont making deliveries inside the city without meeting all the requirements including capital investments and signage,” Thompson said. “We don’t want this to be the model should recreational deliveries be permitted in the future.”

Shannon Fender, a spokeswoman for Native Roots, praised Longmont for its approval of the ordinance. Native Roots has a dispensary at 19 S. Sunset St., in unincorporated Boulder County.

“Thanks for prioritizing an important service for our patients during this trying time,” Fender said. “We are grateful Longmont is listening to the needs of the community.”

State-licensed businesses must follow all state regulations when delivering in Longmont, according to a city staff report. Deliveries must be limited to between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m., the same hours of storefront operations in Longmont, the city said.

Longmont has four city-licensed marijuana dispensaries:

Only Twin Peaks Dispensary is also licensed for medical marijuana products.
