As the song says, "it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas," but the holiday classic also acknowledges that, as the school break drags on and kids get bored, "Mom and Dad can hardly wait for school to start again."

Once again, the Longmont Public Library gifts parents and kids with multiple activities to get out of the house and into the fun over the winter break. First up is a fun "Winter Break Bingo" game for children and teens that starts on Friday, December 21 and carries on through Sunday, January 6. This program challenges kids to read, watch, and listen to new things over winter break in order to win special prizes. Bingo players can pick up a bingo card at the Children's and Teens' desk or download one from either the children's or teens' webpages. When players turn in their completed bingo card but January 6, they'll receive a special prize. No registration is required to play, and this program is open to children and teens of all ages.

On December 27, the Library reboots "Nature Storytime," a family favorite that will join the calendar of regularly offered storytimes on the fourth Thursday of each month, from 10:15 to 11 am. Each month will have a different theme, and the programs will be designed for families with children aged 5 and older. Registration is required and can be accomplished online.

Junior witches and wizards will be delighted with "Muggle Magic: The Science of Harry Potter," an exciting program from CU Science Discovery for 3rd through 5th graders on Thursday, January 3, from 1 to 2 pm. Budding witches and wizards will get an introduction to Mendelian genetics and then explore the magic that surrounds us every day. Join your fellow wizards-in-training as we learn the science behind Hogwarts charms and potions. We'll learn how to make different liquids change color, make things disappear and reappear, and make troll boogers, quicksand and boo bubbles! Don't miss this opportunity to explore the science behind Harry's wizarding feats - it's sure to be a magical time. Registration is required and is available online.

Once the holidays are over, it's time to decompress. Kids and teens are invited to an afternoon Winter Break Read-in on Thursday, January 3, from 1 to 4 pm. Cozy up with a favorite book and spend the afternoon reading and chilling; snacks will be provided. The main children's area will be set up for lounging, and teens can get comfy in the teens area. All booklovers are invited, but children aged 8 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. No registration is required for this event.
