A woman accused of killing the father of her child over a custody dispute last October had her trail set for Feb. 27 during a hearing Wednesday in Boulder District Court.

Devan Schreiner, 27, is accused of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Longmont postal worker Jason Schaefer, 33. Schaefer was shot three times next to his postal delivery van, near a group of mailboxes, on Heatherhill Street just west of Renaissance Drive on Oct. 13, 2021. .

Schreiner’s trial was scheduled to start Monday. But motions filed by prosecutors and defense attorneys prompted a cancellation. That set up a scheduling hearing on Wednesday, according to court officials.

Schreiner’s trial was set for Feb. 27, but the date might be changed again if the cases against Schreiner and co-defendant 34-year-old Andrew Ritchie are rejoined and they are tried as co-defendants, Boulder District Attorney spokeswoman Shannon Carbone said via email Wednesday.

Ritchie is accused of plotting with Schreiner to kill Schaefer.

Schaefer was placing mail in a standing postal box near Heatherhill Street and Renaissance Drive on Oct. 13 about 12:30 p.m. when Schreiner approached him and shot multiple times, Longmont Police said.

Police learned Schaefer and Schreiner have a child together and Schaefer had filed documents with the courts to have parenting time modified, according to an arrest affidavit.

Schreiner had been fired from her job at the post office in Longmont over a dispute with Schaefer two weeks before the shooting, the affidavit states. She was later hired by the Loveland post office.
