Around 150 people were evacuated from the Criminal Justice Center Building located at 1777 Sixth St. in Boulder on Wednesday afternoon.

Around 4:20 p.m. Boulder County deputies detected the strong odor of natural gas throughout the center. Boulder County Sheriff’s officers and members of the 20th Judicial District Attorney’s Office quickly evacuated the building, according to a news release from the county.

The Boulder Fire Department is investigating the source of the odor. Preliminary investigation results suggest that the gas was sucked in by the center’s HVAC system from an unknown source, according to Carrie Haverfield, public information and community outreach specialist.

Boulder Fire also responded to several other complaints of the odor in the area, the news release stated.

The incident is still under investigation at this time.

The Justice Center reopened Thursday morning at 8 a.m.

“Fortunately, there was no smell this morning in the Justice Center,” Haverfield said.
