Media Matters Part 1: The Big Picture
Sunday, October 9, 3 pm;
Free, reservations recommended
Local newspapers provide the soundtrack of our communities, hold our public officials accountable, and help us better understand our nation and our world. But the state of local journalism has never been in greater peril. More than 2,000 local newspapers have closed since 2005.
Featuring Maria Karagianis, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist for the Boston Globe; Chuck Plunkett, former managing editor of the Denver Post editorial page; Dana Coffield, founder of the Colorado Sun; and Melissa Davies, director of the Colorado Media Project. Moderated by Tim Waters, Longmont City Council.
Longmont Chorale returns to the stage
3 p.m.
Longmont Church of Christ
The Longmont Chorale and special guests, Ascent Vocals, return to the stage to present, "A Family Musical Trip to the Magic Kingdom", a family friendly event.
For our first concert since our shutdown in March, 2020, the Longmont Chorale will perform a program which is guaranteed to please all members of the family. The concert includes several selections from the Walt Disney musical canon.
From “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” to “Let it Go”, audience members will surely be tempted to sing along. Included in this Disney-themed concert is a song entitled, “We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3 which is particularly meaningful at this time. After the Chorale’s long absence from the stage, we are coming together musically as a testament to the endurance of the arts in our lives.
Ascents Vocals Contemporary High School Ensemble is a group composed of singers from several area high schools under the direction of Nathan Wubenna.

On Sunday October 9th, the panel focuses on the big picture of local reporting and where the problems and solutions lie. Panelists include Maria Karagianis, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist for the Boston Globe; Melissa Davis, Director of the Colorado Media Project; Chuck Plunkett, Former managing editor of the Denver Post Editorial Page; and Dana Coffield, Colorado Sun founder.
This event will be recorded live at the Longmont Museum at 3 PM on Sunday October 9th. The public is invited to watch and ask questions to the panel.
