On April 27th, Safe Shelter of St. Vrain Valley will be presenting its annual Symposium on Domestic Violence with this year’s focus on its impact on health over a lifetime, including chronic disease, brain development social determinants and on the economy of our community. The 2018 Symposium, which will take place at the Plaza Convention Center in Longmont, CO, will include plenaries and workshops to increase understanding and practical skills for an array of professionals from healthcare to education to law.

“Relationship abuse is not a private matter; it is one of the nation’s most common, but under-reported crimes,” states Safe Shelter’s Development Director, Naomi Harris. “Relationship abuse is also a serious public health problem.”

The regional Symposium will feature authorities in their fields from local experts at Rocky Mountain Law Center to presenters from the Bay Area representing Futures Without Violence and the Prevention Institute. The event’s Keynote address will be presented by Jacqueline Miller of the prestigious Texas Council on Family Violence. Ms. Miller is known for her extensive experience researching and training on health implications of domestic abuse, the child welfare system and on systems change. She is also a survivor. Plenaries and interactive breakout sessions will include historic and current data and the latest intervention approaches. The sessions will explore how inter personal violence has profound ramifications on health and offer on designing and implementing individual and community-centered solutions.

Ms. Harris encourages anyone who is interested in the well-being of their community professionally or personally to visit the Website and register for this affordable day of opportunity: medical and human service professionals, advocates, educators, business leaders, the legal and law enforcement sectors and community members.
