A man in his 50s died Thursday after a skiing accident at Eldora Mountain Ski Resort.

“Witnesses observed the skier fall and slide down the Corona Run at a high rate of speed, then strike a tree,” according to a news release from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.

The skier’s crash was reported just before noon on Thursday.

A medical helicopter was requested but was unable to land at the ski area because of gusting high winds in the area, according to the sheriff’s office.

“The North Colorado MedEvac pilot made a second attempt to land at Nederland High School, and then a third attempt at Barker Reservoir,” the release stated. “Due to the strong winds and the multiple attempts made to land, the helicopter ran low on fuel and had to return to its base."

The injured man was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the release.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s and Boulder County Coroner’s offices are investigating. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Boulder County Coroner’s Office, and his name will be released by the coroner’s office once his identity is confirmed and next of kin has been notified, the release stated.
