At 9 a.m. on Sunday, a rock fall and avalanche were reported in Rocky Mountain National Park. Two people were injured in the accident and one man was killed.

The cause of the rock fall is currently under investigation, according to Kyle Patterson, Management Specialist and Public Affairs Officer.

At approximately 2 p.m. on Sunday, Rocky Mountain National Park Search and Rescue with the use of a Colorado National Guard helicopter, rescued a 27-year-old male from New Mexico who sustained severe injuries.

He was flown to the Medical Center of the Rockies to receive treatment.

A 24-year-old female from New Mexico sustained minor injuries and was flown to Upper Beaver Meadows. She was later transferred by ground for further medical care.

At approximately 5:15 p.m. Sunday night, the deceased male’s body was located using a RECCO device. Due to the winter-like weather conditions throughout Sunday, the recovery of his body could not take place at that time.

On Monday, Rocky Mountain National Park Search and Rescue Team took advantage of a weather window to conduct recovery efforts for the deceased male.

A positive identification will not be released until the autopsy is completed.
