The Longmont Observer is a non-profit, non-partisan, community driven, Longmont focused news organization.

We're 100% volunteer driven.  If you're a writer, think you're a writer, would like to become a writer, a journalist, an editor, a photographer, or a videographer, the Longmont Observer is the place to be.

We've created a constantly updated, digital first publication for Longmont, Colorado. We operate out of TinkerMill, the Longmont Makerspace. We also operate as a kind of makerspace for local news; all volunteers and laser focused on our home: Longmont.

Want to write a column about something you're interested in that affects the residents of Longmont? Come pitch it!

We recently started a beer review column from a local resident, Sabrina Ehlert, who drank a new beer, every day, for a solid year, 365 beers. She knows her beer. Now she's got a column about beer: Mile High Drafts. Or Christi Yoder, who runs a non-profit as her day job, loves local wildlife and has a weekly column, about the animals and plants you see everyday in Longmont. It's called the Longmont Weekly Wild. Or John Ensworth, who loves weather and writes our in-depth weather column every morning.  If you like a wide range of things, like Lizzy Rogers, a recent transplant from the UK, you can pick a wide range of stories and dig into them like her excellent Prairie Dog series.  If you're a videographer, we do regular stories on local events, businesses, non-profits and other community oriented things. Check out Matt Steininger's interview with the local business owner of Flight Deck for an example. Are you interested in our local government? Join Sergio Angeles or Scott Converse, who cover our weekly city council meetings and other City of Longmont related topics. We are looking for people of all ages, we have two high school interns, Haven Korte and Mariana Vazquez, who have each written a piece.

Do you want to help with organizing things? We're just starting the process of developing a data driven reporting model, what some call "big data" journalism, we could use your help in developing and putting it together if you understand the technology, or want to learn about it and apply it at the Longmont Observer.

We want to help you make your stories happen. Here are just some of the areas we are looking for (this list is not conclusive, have an idea, suggest it or write about it):

  • Opinions
  • Local business coverage/reviews
  • Investigative pieces
  • Dining reviews
  • Health and wellness
  • Arts,music,literature coverage/reviews
  • Entertainment coverage/reviews
  • Technology information/reviews
  • Local sports (including live streaming)
  • Education
  • School extracurricular activities (band, debate, clubs, etc)
  • Charity events

Just ask yourself: What would you like to know more about in your community? Well, you're likely not alone.

If it's something that would interest other people in our community, chances are, we'll help make that section happen. We'll also teach you the skills to make it happen and provide a platform to do it.

Email us at: [email protected]. Or, come to one of our daily weekday editorial meetings. We meet Monday through Friday at 10am at TinkerMill (1840 Delaware Place, Unit A, Longmont, CO 80501). All our editorial meetings are open to the public so drop by anytime.
