NEWS RELEASE
CITY OF LONGMONT
**************************
Dear Community Members,
As we approach the July 4th celebrations, we would like to take a moment to address an important issue affecting our community's safety and well-being, especially our veterans and animals. While fireworks are often associated with excitement and patriotism, it's crucial to recognize the potential dangers and harm they can cause.
Fireworks can pose a significant risk to the safety of individuals, including those who have served in our armed forces. Many veterans have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other conditions that loud noises and sudden flashes of light can trigger. The unexpected sound of fireworks can bring back traumatic memories and cause severe distress to these brave men and women who have sacrificed so much for our country. We kindly request your consideration for our veterans and urge you to explore alternative ways of celebrating our nation's independence that doesn't involve loud and explosive fireworks. Consider attending community events that provide controlled fireworks displays or engage in activities that promote unity and appreciation for our country more inclusively and sensitively.
Additionally, it's essential to remember the impact of fireworks on our beloved animals. The loud noises and bright lights can cause extreme anxiety and stress for pets and wildlife. Animals have heightened senses, and sudden and unpredictable explosions can terrify them, leading to panic, injuries, or even escaping from their homes or enclosures. To protect our furry friends, please be mindful of their well-being during this time. Ensure your pets have a safe and secure environment where they can retreat when fireworks are set off. Consider keeping them indoors, providing them with comforting spaces, and playing soothing music to help drown out the noise. If you are aware of stray or frightened animals in your neighborhood, please reach out to local animal control or shelters to assist in ensuring their safety.
Please do not underestimate fireworks poses fire hazards, especially in dry conditions. The risk of brush and grass fires increases significantly during this time of year. As we've already witnessed a few incidents in our community, it's crucial to exercise caution and responsibility when using fireworks, ensuring that they are legal, not leaving the ground, and not exploding. By adhering to the laws and ordinances in place, we can collectively reduce the chances of accidental fires, injuries, and damage to homes or properties.
Let's exercise common sense and prioritize the safety of our community above all else.
We are privileged and honored to serve you. We sincerely hope that we can all enjoy a happy July 4th season without anyone getting injured or property being damaged by fireworks. Together, we can foster a sense of unity, understanding, and compassion while celebrating our nation's independence.
Thank you for your cooperation, consideration, and support in creating a safe and inclusive community.
Warm regards, Zach Ardis, Longmont Public Safety Chief
