The Colorado State Patrol is continuing to investigate a two-car fatal crash involving a marked Aurora Police Department vehicle that occurred on Saturday.

The incident occurred at the intersection of East Bates Ave. and South Chambers Rd., at approximately 8:20 p.m. At the time of the crash, the Aurora police officer was responding to a non-emergent call traveling northbound on Chambers Rd. without sirens or emergency lights activated. The driver of a Toyota Corolla was crossing Chambers on East Bates Ave. when its passenger side was struck by the front of the officer’s vehicle.

The driver of the Corolla sustained fatal injuries, and the Aurora police officer sustained serious injuries.

The CSP is conducting a thorough investigation into this fatal crash. This includes interviews, data collection from both vehicles and other evidence to include the initial on-scene investigation.

“These types of investigations are taken very seriously and can span months to complete,” said Sgt. Troy Kessler, Colorado State Patrol public information officer. “Information gathering can be a slow process, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we conduct a thorough investigation into this tragic incident.”

After the CSP investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office for review.

Please contact the Aurora Police Department for any questions in regards to their policies and procedures.
