This Friday, March 3, 2023, troopers from Vail and Eagle will conduct high visibility enforcement operations looking for motorists engaging in unsafe driving behaviors through Glenwood Canyon. The Colorado State Patrol will be focusing on speeding, unsafe passing violations and other forms of aggressive driving in an effort to prevent needless crashes.

“Driving through Glenwood Canyon has gotten very unpleasant and dangerous due to impatient drivers who speed and weave through traffic. It has also has caused numerous shutdowns of this vital interstate,” stated Col. Matthew C. Packard, chief of the Colorado State Patrol. “We hope our presence is a reminder to drive responsibly.”

Unsafe speeds can lead to a number of additional driving errors including the inability to maintain a safe lane position and it reduces the amount of time both the speeding driver and those around them have to brake or move out of the way to avoid a collision.

In addition, lane violations, including unsafe lane changes, can cause particularly deadly results and troopers will be watching for aggressive drivers moving through the canyon.

Interstate-70 sees heavy volume every season throughout the year which only underscores the importance of sharing the road and following simple rules. Residents and travelers in the Glenwood Canyon area are asked to watch the posted speed limit while driving. In addition, the Colorado State Patrol wants you to pay attention behind the wheel and avoid aggressive motorists.

Troopers continue to take a low tolerance approach to lane violations while launching a yearlong campaign called “Stay in Your Lane.” This campaign is designed to remind people to control their lane position based on their current driving environment. This campaign also aims to bring attention to three of the most common and avoidable behaviors that contribute to lane violations – driving aggressively, driving distracted or driving while impaired.
