The Colorado Department of Transportation and AB Underground will construct safety improvements at the intersection of Colorado Highway 52 and Weld County Road 37 starting in August. Traffic shifts and lane closures are anticipated during phased construction.

This project will add left-turn lanes on all intersection approaches in addition to a right-turn lane from eastbound CO 52 to southbound CR 37. New culverts and roadside ditches are part of the project. The work zone will be resurfaced with asphalt, and signing and striping upgrades will enhance safety and visibility.

Private utility companies have been working in the area for several months to relocate utilities in advance of construction.

CO 52 is one of the few east-west routes that provides a critical connection between CO 119, I-25, US 85 and I-76. CDOT recently completed the CO 52 Planning and Environmental Linkages Study to understand the existing and future safety and multi-modal transportation needs along 42 miles of CO 52 from CO 119 in Boulder County to CO 79 east of Hudson in Weld County.

“CDOT is pleased to kick off construction at this critical intersection to address the existing and growing safety and operational needs at County Road 37 and CO 52,” said CDOT Region 4 transportation director, Heather Paddock.

AB Underground was awarded a $3.1-million contract to construct the intersection improvements. CO 52 will remain open during construction. Project completion is anticipated in December 2022.

Frequent traffic shifts and lane closures are expected. Drivers should expect trucks entering and exiting the work zone. Temporary rough driving surfaces may be present.

General work hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with occasional extended hours and weekend work. Construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change. Weekly updates are available on the project web page.
