Sean Hyche had been identified as a suspect in a bike theft and, when confronted by the owner of the bike, had punched her in the face and broke her nose. Boulder Police Officers found and arrested the defendant at a camp that was strewn with bike parts and other suspected stolen property. Sean Hyche was arrested by the Boulder Police Department on April 3, 2022. The District Attorney's Office filed charges of Second Degree Assault and Robbery, both Class 4 felonies, against the defendant. The prosecution later filed additional charges. Those charges included two counts of Habitual Criminal under 18-1.3.-801 due to this defendant's criminal history. The filing of those charges exposed the defendant to a higher sentencing range.

This morning, the defendant entered a guilty plea to the top count of Assault in the Second Degree. The case went to immediate sentencing and, as stipulated, the defendant was sentenced to 16 years in state prison.

District Attorney Michael Dougherty stated, "The victim suffered a terrible and traumatic attack by this defendant. The sentence of 16 years in state prison is certainly appropriate, given what this defendant did. His conduct was outrageous and unacceptable. This office will respond strongly to threats to community safety and the violent victimization of our community members."
