NEWS RELEASE
LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF BOULDER COUNTY
*************************
The League of Women Voters of Boulder County (LVWBC) will honor three Colorado leaders at its Annual Meeting on Saturday, May 15. Awards for elected officials, community partners and League member leaders are made annually based on nominations from LWVBC members.

The League of Women Voters, founded in 1920, is a non-profit, non-partisan organization working at the national, state and local levels to empower voters and defend democracy.  This year, Boulder County’s League is celebrating its 90th anniversary. LWVBC’s 281 members engage in a wide range of activities including voter registration, outreach and education; policy advocacy; and initiatives such as National Popular Vote, fair district mapping, and alternative voting methods.

“It takes a village to ensure that our Boulder County community members have the right, the information and the confidence to engage in our political process,” said LWVBC President Elizabeth Crowe. “The League’s Annual Meeting awards are an opportunity to show our appreciation for leaders in our community and region, for their work to advance that goal.”

In addition to its own member appreciation awards, on Saturday LWVBC will award the following individuals:

  • Community Partner Award: Sergio Angeles, Longmont Public Media, for his work to support the League’s virtual candidate forums – including broadcasting to local cable Channel 8 and live streaming to social media – for the 2020 primary and general elections.

  • Elected Official Award: Representative Chris Kennedy (D-House District 23), for his work to promote more expressive, alternative voting methods. Rep. Kennedy, with support from aide Jakki Davison, introduced the Instant Run-off (Ranked) Choice Voting bill currently under consideration in the 2021 Legislative session.

  • Elected Official Award: Senator Sonya Jaquez Lewis (D-Senate District 17), for her work to sponsor proposed legislation like SB-199, supporting Colorado’s immigrant community members; and to support gun safety laws being considered in the 2021 Legislative session.

Due to COVID-19, the LWVBC Annual Meeting will again be held virtually. For more information please contact Mandy Nuku, LWVBC Operations Director at [email protected] or visit the event registration webpage.
