CITY OF LONGMONT
**************************
“There once was a contest one fall ...” For customers of Longmont Power & Communications, that familiar rhythm could lead the way to a $100 Downtown Longmont gift card in this year’s Public Power Week limerick contest.

This year, the competition asks LPC customers to write a quick five-line verse in limerick style about why they love their community-owned power. For example, a resident who works remotely might write:

My home’s now an office and school,
So reliable power’s my tool,
It lights up my display,
And it helps start my day,
With the coffee I need for my fuel.

“It’s an easy and fun way to celebrate what our residents and businesses have been able to do with the electricity Longmont provides,” LPC Executive Director David Hornbacher said. “And like that power, it’s a simple thing that helps make life a little more enjoyable.”

All entries must be submitted by Oct. 10. Two winners will be randomly drawn from the entrants.

Held in the first full week of October, Public Power Week (Oct. 4-10) celebrates the more than 2,000 towns and cities across the United States that own and operate their own electric utilities. That includes Longmont, where LPC offers the third-lowest electric rates in the state for homes and businesses out of 57 utilities and has been recognized as a Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3) by the American Public Power Association since 2006. LPC was the first utility in Colorado to receive that recognition.

Participants in the contest must be part of a home, business or school that gets its electricity from LPC. There is no age restriction or entry fee. Limericks may be submitted by either:

1) Mailing or hand-delivering them to 1100 S. Sherman St., Longmont, CO 80501. Entries should say “Attn: Public Power Week contest” on the envelope and include contact information.

2) Emailing the entry to [email protected].

3) Sending the entry by private message to LPC’s Facebook page.

Anyone with questions about the contest may call 303-651-8793 or go online to https://www.longmontcolorado.gov/publicpowerweek for more information. All entries may be used in future publicity.
