PUC Lifeline program offers discounts on internet

DENVER - The Public Utilities Commission (PUC), part of the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA), recognizes National Lifeline Awareness Week (September 20-24, 2021) and encourages consumers to learn more about whether they qualify for the Federal Communications Commissions (FCC) program.

Lifeline provides up to $9.25 per month in support for wireless and broadband services for low-income subscribers, and up to $34.25 per month for those located on Tribal lands.

The PUC wants residents to stay aware and connected, as access to local emergency services and community resources is vital to keeping residents informed and safe. Lifeline helps low-income earners to stay connected to the nation’s voice and broadband networks, allowing them to maintain access to health care providers, emergency services, and other support systems.

Lifeline has been around since 1985, however, in 2016 the FCC made efforts to modernize the program to include broadband as a support service. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, they have also worked to make it easier for individuals who have lost employment during the pandemic to enroll for these benefits.
