Hiker rescued after medical emergency on First Flatiron Trail

A 33-year-old man found himself in a scary situation while hiking on Mount Toll on Sunday.

The male hiker was attempting to traverse across Mount Toll, when he suddenly lost his grip on a rock and fell approximately 15 feet down a gully of slick, nearly vertical rock, in which he was unable to escape from.

Luckily, the man only sustained minor injuries during the fall, and was able to call 911 for assistance.

Because of thunderstorms that were occurring over the continental divide, Grand County Search and Rescue were unable to send out rescuers via helicopter, which resulted in the rescue being conducted from Boulder County.

A team from Rocky Mountain Rescue Group would hike in from Brainard Lake and would successfully make verbal contact with the stuck hiker.

Utilizing fixed ropes and building anchors, rescuers descended approximately 600 feet from the ridgeline, and were able to locate the hiker.

The rescuers secured the hiker with a harness that was tied into the rope system, and with the assistance of the rescuers belaying him, the hiker was successful in climbing up to the ridge.

The hiker would be evaluated for injuries, and was then able to hike out to the trailhead.
