Colorado customers will soon see the benefits of the next generation of the electric grid as the company begins installing new smart electric meters at their homes and businesses. Installation work began this week in Denver as part of a multi-year project to bring customers cleaner, safer and more reliable energy through digital technology.

“We’re excited to take this next step in building a smarter, more resilient and efficient energy grid and making it easier than ever for customers to understand and manage their energy use,” said Alice Jackson, president of Xcel Energy—Colorado. “Smart meters are just part of the advanced grid of the future, where new tools and technology will improve reliability while delivering more clean energy.”

Crews will be installing about 15,000 smart meters on homes and businesses each week, with 395,000 installed in Colorado by the end of this year.

Xcel Energy started exploring advanced grid technology in the state in 2016, presenting plans to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission to build the energy future. This includes new tools and technology for smarter energy service while creating a better customer experience with improved reliability and faster outage restoration. The Advanced Grid will also help deliver more clean energy while keeping bills low.

Smart meters will give customers near real-time energy use data that they will be able to access through the company’s My Account app, or via xcelenergy.com. Customers will also have access to programs and services that will help them better understand their energy usage and how to improve efficiency and find more savings.

Xcel Energy’s customers will receive company updates beginning three months in advance of receiving a new smart meter. More information on Xcel Energy’s Advanced Grid initiative can be found at xcelenergy.com/SmartMeter with a video overview at Advanced Grid Overview - YouTube.
