Statewide Motor Vehicle Office Close for Computer System Upgrade August 1-3

A new computer system will be installed in motor vehicle offices across the state of Colorado, including all three Boulder County locations for three days, August 1-3.

According to a press release from Boulder County, "the three-day closure will allow for the successful transfer of data and technical upgrades needed to make the switch. All offices will reopen on Monday, August 6."

The closure will include state-run driver's license offices on August 2-3.

The new computer installation is anticipated to reduce wait times by speeding up transaction times. A later phase, set to be installed after the initial rollout, "will be able to complete a number of new transactions online that previously required an in-person visit, such as applying for license plates and requesting emissions extensions," according to the press release.

"With the impending 3-day closure, the Boulder County Clerk & Recorder’s office is urging residents to renew their registration online or by mail, if eligible, or to schedule appointments for all other services, for some time in August after the office reopens (appointment link is available at www.BoulderCounty.org/MV)," according to the press release.

There is a one-month grace period for renewing vehicle registration. "Thus, if a resident’s registration is set to expire in July, the person actually has until the end of August to renew without penalty. In most cases, this can even be done online until the last day of the grace month," states the press release.

The press release also states that "during the closure, online vehicle registration renewal will be available (www.Colorado.gov/RenewPlates). Additionally, the Boulder office self-service motor vehicle renewal express kiosk, which provides vehicle stickers, will also be accessible during the closure period. There are additional MV Express Kiosks outside of Boulder County, which residents can use as well. Locations can be found online at: https://comvexpress.com/kiosks."
