Morning Brief: Longmont City Council Designated June 23, 2018, as "Vance Brand Airport Day"

Presented by Mayor Brian J. Bagley, the Longmont City Council endorsed a proclamation designating June 23, 2018, as "Vance Brand Airport Day."

Those present to accept the proclamation were David Slayter, airport manager, Howard Morgan, president of Longmont Owners’ and Pilots’ Association (LOPA), Dave Copp, vice president of LOPA, Brigette Rodriguez, Longmont Airport Expo coordinator of social media, and Dale VanZant, chairman of the Airport Advisory Board and the EXPO Planning Committee.

LOPA represents the hangar owners, business owners and pilots at the Vance Brand Airport in Longmont.

Vance Brand Airport represents a "vital asset to the City of Longmont," as mentioned in the proclamation.

Slayter said, "We want to thank the City Council, as well as the citizens of Longmont, for their support of the airport."

Referring to the proclamation, "Vance Brand Airport annually contributes over 100 jobs and $10 million to our local economy; and WHEREAS, the aviation community consistently donates its time and resources to support our community and individual residents during crises; and WHEREAS, the airport offers significant recreational opportunities to thousands of people every year; and WHEREAS, the airport is a vital training resource for new corporate and airline pilots in our state and nation."

The aviation community will be hosting an aviation EXPO for the City of Longmont and its visitors from Colorado and nearby states on June 23, 2018.

Longmont Concert Band Performs in Estes Park on June 21, 2018

The Longmont Concert Band will be performing their "European Vacation" concert at Performance Park, located at 417 West Elkhorn Ave., Estes Park, on June 21 at 7 p.m.

"The concert will feature European favorites including the Radetzky March by Johann Strauss, Waltz no. 2 by Dimitri Shostakovich and the Champagne Galop by Hans Christian Lumbye. The concert will also feature works by Americans including Leonard Bernstein, Leroy Anderson and John Philip Sousa," states a Facebook post by The Longmont Concert Band.

According to the Longmont Concert Band website, "The Longmont Concert Band is a non-profit organization composed of volunteer musicians from Longmont and surrounding communities."

Longmont Concert Band members range in age from 17 to 82. It was formed in 2003 and began with 15 players and has since grown to include over 40 players.

"Comprised of amateur musicians from Longmont and the surrounding area, the band provides a forum for area musicians to work together as a team," is stated on the website.

Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters Endorses Michael Dougherty in Bolder DA Primary

Today, the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters endorsed Michael

Dougherty in the Boulder County DA Primary.

Mark Thompson, Representative for the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters released the following statement: “Having a District Attorney with integrity and the pose to aggressively go after corruption is critical to the continued success of our industry. We believe that Boulder County has the best possible choice for their District Attorney in Michael Dougherty and the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters is honored to stand shoulder to shoulder with him in this election and for many years to come. Michael understands the needs of union workers and we know he will fight for us everyday. We hope you will join us in supporting Michael Dougherty."

District Attorney Michael Dougherty made the following statement: “I am honored to have the strong support of Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters. Their support for my campaign, and an administration dedicated to fighting for workers, means a lot to me. Coming from a blue-collar family, I recognize the important role that unions have in protecting workers. I will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them in fighting for workers’ rights. We've only just begun the important work for the people of Boulder County.”

The Primary Election is June 26

Deadline to request a replacement mail ballot or to register and be a mailed a ballot is Monday, June 18

The following is a press release from Boulder County Elections and is published by the Longmont Observer as a public service. 

The Boulder County Elections Division wants to remind voters that the Primary Election is on Tuesday, June 26.  Elections in Colorado are conducted by mail ballot with Voter Service and Polling Centers also available for those who would like to use accessible voting equipment or for those who prefer to vote in person.

For voters who need a replacement mail ballot, Monday, June 18 is the last day to request a replacement mail ballot be sent to them. Additionally, for first time voters, Monday is also the deadline to register and be mailed a ballot. After Monday, replacement mail ballots can be requested in-person at a Voter Service Centers. Eligible voters may also register to vote at any time, online or in-person, but must visit a Voter Service Center after Monday to request a ballot.

If a voter is mailing a ballot, the Elections Division recommends that voters mail their ballot no later than Tuesday, June 19. Otherwise, we recommend a voter drop-off their mail ballot at any one our many 24-hour ballot drop boxes. Ballots must be received by 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 26 to be counted. Postmarks do not count.

The Elections Division also wants to remind unaffiliated voters to vote and return only one party ballot, otherwise none of their votes will be counted. Additionally, please remember to avoid swapping ballot envelopes with a spouse or household member. If an affiliated voter returns an envelope that contains a ballot that they are not eligible to vote, the ballot will not be counted.
