Morning Brief: Longmont Housing Authority Opens Section 8 Housing Waiting List June 6-7, 2018

The Longmont Housing Authority (LHA) is opening the waiting list for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program on Wednesday, June 6 and Thursday, June 7, 2018.

Applications for the waiting list will be available at the LHA Administrative office, located at 1228 Main St., Longmont, or the LHA website. Applications will only be available from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 6-7.

Completed applications must be submitted in one of the following ways: email to [email protected], fax to (303) 682-2899 or in person or by mail to the LHA Administrative office at 1228 Main St., Longmont, CO 80501.

"Preference shall be given to applicants who live/work in Longmont, live/work in Boulder County and Homeless," states a public notice sent via an email from Imagine!

Boulder County Bar Association Young Lawyer's Award is given to Lys Runnerstrom

Lys Runnerstrom was recently nominated for and received the Boulder County Bar Association Young Lawyer's Award. The following is a copy of the nomination letter, written by Michael Dougherty, Boulder County District Attorney.

Camp Bow Wow Releases Opening Date

Camp Bow Wow is a premier doggy daycare center set to open in Longmont. It is located at 801 S. Sherman St., Longmont.

After a recent interview, the Longmont Observer reached out to Camp Bow Wow about their opening date. Sarah Wilson, with Camp Bow Wow, mentioned in an email, "So far opening is right on track we are still planning our open day to be June 2!" 

Left Hand Yoga Studio Starts a GoFundMe Campaign

After encountering some recent hardships while trying to open Left Hand Yoga Studio, Owner and Founder James Allison launched a GoFundMe campaign.

Left Hand Yoga Studio opened its doors on March 17, 2018 and celebrated its ribbon cutting with the Longmont Area Chamber of Commerce on April 6.

An Update on our Finances & Taxes

Although we are not required to by the IRS to submit taxes for up to three years, we filed our first round of taxes last week. Since we made under $50,000 in annual revenue in 2017, we were required to fill out IRS form 990-N. When we receive an update from the IRS, we will publish the tax return on our website.

The Longmont Observer had $7,216.91 in revenue in 2017; expenses were $3,643.75. Since the start of 2018, the Longmont Observer has made $8,590.16 in revenue and $3,970.66 in expenses.

The Longmont Observer primary expense has been insurance, followed by our office in TinkerMill. We have also begun to promote and “boost” articles via Facebook to get the word out about the Longmont Observer.

To date, we have not paid any volunteers nor freelance writers for content. It is our goal to get 1 to 3 paid staff by the end of 2018.

Volunteer Position Available: The Longmont Observer has a volunteer position available to report on city council. City council meets most Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center, located at 350 Kimbark St., Longmont. The requirements for this position include:

  • Must plan to attend all regular/study sessions of the Longmont City Council
  • Must be willing to write/take photos/record the session
  • Must meet fast-paced deadlines

The Longmont Observer will train you on how to write city council articles and how to run the video equipment for the meeting. To apply please send your name, contact information and a brief statement as to what interests you the most about this position to [email protected].

Editorial and Volunteer Meeting Information: The Longmont Observer holds open to the public editorial meetings every Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. in the conference room at TinkerMill, 1840 Deleware Pl., Longmont.
