Morning Brief: Longmont Startup Week Hosts Launch Party on June 29

Longmont Startup Week will host their Launch Party on June 29 from 4-6 p.m. at CoSolve, located at 350 Terry St., Longmont.

The Launch Party will include announcements for this year's Longmont Startup Week's tracks, keynote speakers, events, collaborations in the works, opportunities to learn how to volunteer and a chance to meet the planning committee and sponsors.

This celebration of Longmont's startup community will also include beer and food.

This year marks the fourth Longmont Startup Week, which will be held July 23-27.

According to a press release, "Longmont Startup Week is a collaborative gathering for entrepreneurs, intrepreneurs, investors, and talent that invigorates and nurtures Longmont’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. The theme for LSW18 is “Smarter. Together.” Events and content will focus on creators, commerce, capital, and community and will highlight Longmont as an entrepreneurial ecosystem for civic innovation. All events are free to attend and provide outstanding learning and networking opportunities."

Dougherty Wins Primary Election, Will Continue as Boulder County District Attorney

Tonight, Boulder County primary voters delivered a considerable victory to Michael Dougherty over his opponent Mike Foote. Dougherty, who was appointed to the office by Governor John Hickenlooper, received a concession call from Mr. Foote just after the 8:15 p.m. results were filed. Dougherty celebrated the victory with friends, family, and supporters close to his home in Boulder.

District Attorney Michael Dougherty made the following statement:

“Tonight, I am so honored, privileged, and humbled to earn the tremendous support of the primary voters. From day one of this campaign, I wanted to remain focused on the core mission of the District Attorney, and that mission is to do the right thing and administer justice fairly. Boulder County is a community of individuals who want public safety and to see real progress made in criminal justice reform.  With tonight’s win, I am looking forward to continuing my work in prioritizing impactful reforms and public safety. Tonight may mark the end of my campaign, but it is just the beginning of the next chapter for our county.”

UCHealth’s first Bike Safety Day Will Feature Free Helmets

Cycling fans invited to learn safety tips, test skills at youth bike obstacle course.

With summer in full swing now, more people are jumping on their bikes and hitting the road. Next week, the team at UCHealth Longs Peak Hospital is hoping to arm those bicyclists – young and old – with the gear and the knowledge to stay safe as they cycle.

The new hospital is teaming up with Longmont Police Department to host Bike Safety Day, where 100 youth bicycle helmets and 100 adult bicycle helmets will be properly fitted and given away for free.

The event will be held from 1-4 p.m. July 2 at Longs Peak Hospital, 1750 E. Ken Pratt Blvd, Longmont.

In addition to the free helmet distribution, safety experts will be on hand to inspect helmets. Older helmets can breakdown and be ineffective. They also will offer up bike safety tips and conduct bike safety checks.

Organizers encourage kids age 4-10 to bring their bikes to the event to take on the bike obstacle course as well.

Can’t make it to the Bike Safety Day? Here are a couple tips to ensure your helmet fits and that you are wearing it properly:

• Snug: Even without the strap fastened, the rider should be able to shake her head without the helmet falling off.
• Straight: The helmet should be square on the head, almost level with the eyebrows — not tipped back or angled forward.
• Strap: The straps should go around the ear then meet below the chin. The straps should form a "V" around each ear.
• Snap: The straps must be snapped together. When buckled, the strap under the chin should be just loose enough to fit one finger.
