LAFAYETTE, Colo. – On Wednesday, Representative Mike Foote became the first candidate to formally file paperwork with the Secretary of State’s office seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination in the upcoming election for District Attorney in Colorado’s 20th Judicial District.

Foote is a 45-year old father of two. He is a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Law, has lived in Lafayette since 2005, is a 14-year veteran of the Boulder County District Attorney’s office, and is in his sixth year representing Longmont, Lafayette, and Louisville in the State House of Representatives.

“I am committed to this community and committed to the Boulder County District Attorney’s office,” Foote said. “Since I started at the legislature in 2013, I’ve worked every day on behalf of Boulder County families. My experience representing the community, along with my time working as a Deputy District Attorney in this office will help me build upon the great things Stan Garnett and his staff have already achieved.”

Rep. Foote was the first person to publicly announce that he had applied to Governor Hickenlooper to fill the vacancy created by Stan Garnett’s impending departure. Although that appointment is expected soon, the office of the 20th Judicial District Attorney (encompassing Boulder County) will be up for election this year.

“The vacancy and upcoming elections present a very quick timeline. I’m eager to connect with Boulder County voters, share my vision for the office with them, and earn their support as their next District Attorney.”

Foote continues to seek Governor Hickenlooper’s vacancy appointment.

“I have applied for the vacancy appointment and would be honored to be selected by the Governor,” Foote said.

During his six years of service in the State House, Foote has built a reputation as a leading expert on energy policy and criminal justice matters. He has been a staunch advocate for vulnerable populations, domestic violence survivors, and sexual assault survivors. He has also led efforts to enact gun safety measures and worked to reduce recidivism by improving reintegration processes.

“I’m proud of the work I’ve done representing eastern Boulder County at the Capitol,” Foote said. “It will influence my service as District Attorney. The Boulder office will be a national leader in restorative justice, juvenile and young adult diversion programs, and criminal justice reform measures that improve public safety. It will be professional, honest, and transparent. It will represent the community well. I’m excited about the opportunity to share my vision for the District Attorney’s office with Boulder County voters and earn their trust.”
