Plastic waste is a “planetary crisis,” according to the United Nations, harming the world’s oceans, marine life, and communities that depend on them. Plastic can be found almost everywhere, from the bottom of the ocean to the seafood on your dinner plate, even in your feces. About 75 percent of all the plastic ever created is now considered waste, only nine percent of which has been recycled. Americans alone throw away about 33.6 million tons of plastic each year.

So what are the challenges and opportunities for reducing plastic waste in Boulder County?

On Thursday, January 31 KGNU Community Radio and Eco-Cycle will host a Community Conversation on Plastic Waste which will include representatives from Eco-Cycle, the Inland Ocean Coalition and local business and sustainability leaders. The community conversation will solicit input from attendees.

Thanks to the support from Boulder County and the Zero Waste funding, in 2018 KGNU Community Radio launched a year-long Zero Waste Radio Series and Public Education Media Campaign on KGNU, 88.5 FM featuring in-depth news stories and public service announcements designed to educate and inform listeners on the dynamics and underlying issues around zero waste and recycling in our communities. Archives to KGNU’s Zero Waste Radio Series can be found at news.kgnu.org.

Boulder County residents, industry professionals, organizers, and the general public are invited to participate. Please RSVP at http://bit.ly/2su648Q.

Doors at 6 p.m., the panel conversation will get started at 6:30 p.m. and will will end with a open discussion and session from 7:30- 8 p.m.
