Kathy Gebhardt announced her candidacy to the Colorado State Board of Education for the second congressional district

Kathy Gebhardt announced Sunday that she is running for a position on the Colorado State Board of Education in the 2024 election. She hopes to represent the second congressional district that includes Boulder, Clear Creek, Eagle, Gilpin, Grand, Jackson, Jefferson, Larimer, Routt, Summit and Weld counties.

Gebhardt’s five children attended school in the Boulder Valley School District. She served on the BVSD school board for eight years and as president for two years. She currently serves on the National Association of School Boards board of directors and chairs its Board Action Committee.

“I believe deeply in public education. I am running because I believe in the dignity of every child, and will work to ensure that every child has an equitable opportunity to succeed in life,” Gebhardt said.

As an education attorney, Gebhardt worked on three significant school finance cases of which included Giardino v. State of Colorado. The case was a class action lawsuit that challenged the funding structure for capital construction in Colorado, Gebhardt said in a news release. The outcome of the case resulted in $2.5 billion being invested in K-12 schools — the largest state infusion of K-12 facility funding in the state’s history.

Gebhardt is also an adjunct professor at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and the University of Colorado Law School and the School of Education where she teaches education law.
