St. Vrain community challenged to raise $20K for school supplies

“To a student in need, a backpack filled with school supplies is so much more than a backpack; it’s a powerful toolbox that bolsters self-esteem and unleashes confidence,” the news release states.

Like everything else, the price for school supplies has increased. In 2021, the St. Vrain Valley School Education Foundation stated that the average amount families spent on school supplies was $75. In 2023, that amount has increased to $100. The education foundation is challenging the St. Vrain community to help students begin the school year prepared.

According to the education foundation website, 32% of students in the St. Vrain Valley School District live at or near the poverty level.

“When facing difficult financial decisions or tradeoffs, such as buying groceries or school supplies, it can impact a student’s success in the classroom and in life,” a news release from the education foundation stated.

This year the Crayons to Calculators program has set a goal of distributing 4,700 backpacks to students across the district. Backpacks are filled with supplies that match the district’s grade-appropriate list.

In order to support the program, the education foundation issued a challenge to the community to raise $20,000 through individual and organizational contributions.

“The challenge is a fun way to bring organizations and networks together in support of a common goal: supporting local students and equitable classrooms. The challenge is open to businesses, community partners, friend groups and families. The Community Challenge will be open until August 31st,” the news release states.

Through the website, individuals or organizations can become fundraisers by filling out a form. The form includes a personal message — that can be edited — asking for donations. The message can be shared via URL that will take people to a fundraising page.

People can also donate without becoming a fundraiser.
