LONGMONT, Colo. – Local author Bill Ellis is ready to show you how to tackle one of the most difficult aspects of writing historical fiction – doing the background research.  Historical fiction, the blending of historical facts with fictional elements and characters, is a perennial reader favorite, but writing it well depends not only on the author’s writing ability, but on his or her research skills, too. Background research is crucial to creating a relatable and realistic scene in an historical novel.

In this new program at the Longmont Public Library from 6:30 to 7:30 pm on Tuesday, April 3, Ellis will use his most recent novel, Stirling Plantation, as an example to describe his research process and share his tips for conducting background research. Stirling Plantation is Ellis' sixth novel. He has contributed frequent political and social commentary to the Longmont Times-Call for the last 12 years. Also, he has taught writing workshops since 1976 and worked as a writer-in-residence at Sunset Middle School under grants from the Longmont Council for the Arts.  This program does not require advance registration, and Stirling Plantation will be available for purchase after the program.
