‘Disco Dumpster’ Panel Artists Needed for Paid Live Painting Session During Longmont Arts Week

As part of Longmont Arts Week, eight artists will be chosen to paint a disco-themed five-foot-by-three-foot cement board to be placed on different trash enclosures in alleyways in the city.

The Longmont Creative District is calling for “Disco Dumpster” panel concept submissions from painters and muralists for a live painting event on Saturday, September 13 to culminate the end of Longmont Arts Week, which will take place from September 6 through September 13. Longmont Arts Week is hosted annually by the Longmont Creative District to increase awareness and promote creatives and creative organizations within the city.

“We have incredibly talented artists in Longmont and across the Front Range,” said Longmont Creates Director Eric Kawczynski. “The partially live-painted disco panels are a uniquely symbiotic experience for both the artist and viewer by bringing the two together in a place that is rarely associated with art and intention… a trash enclosure. Viewers are invited to observe the artists’ creative process in real time and inquire deeper into the artist and their work; while artists are invited to connect with the community, showcase their talents, share inspirations, and allow the viewer to observe painting techniques in a more intimate way.”

The “Disco Dumpster” panels are five-foot-by-three-foot cement boards that will be used to close off seven side access points on all east alleyway enclosures. Longmont’s Universal Recycling Program (URO) requires certain businesses to develop a composting program as part of an initiative to reduce landfill waste. The fourth phase of the URO took effect in June, which requires space for composting totes outside of local businesses downtown. These “Disco Dumpster” panels, to be displayed in the creative district, will help close off the access points to the composting totes to comply with the regulations “in style.”

The guidelines are that every painting must be disco themed, and artists must be committed to painting live on September 13 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. to complete their paintings. There will be eight artists chosen, who will receive $200 up front and $200 after completing the painting with a protective seal on September 13. Artists will receive their panels the week of August 25 and can begin working on them. During the live painting event, artists will make finishing touches and apply a protective coating. As part of the submission and application process, artists must submit three completed works of three-by-five feet or larger.

The “Disco Dumpster” panels will be installed on all enclosures located in the East Alleyway in between Main Street and Kimbark. Flavor of India, Lyons Gaddis, and the Pumphouse each have two entryway installations behind the business in the alleyway. In addition, there will be one behind the Aspen Center and one behind MinuteMan Press.

The deadline for panel concept submissions is Tuesday, August 19 at 11:59 p.m. Artists can send their submissions to [email protected]. Chosen artists will be paid for the live painting.

There are currently 13 other events listed as a part of Longmont Arts Week, including chalk art, drawing classes, and live music. Many of the events are free, but there are fees to join certain art classes. More information can be found on the Longmont Creative District’s Instagram and Facebook pages.
