Longmont, CO – Steel Magnolias opens for a three weekend run February 2 with the Longmont Theatre Company featuring this timeless and beloved classic. A young beautician, newly arrived in a small Louisiana town, finds work at the local salon. There a small group of close friends welcome her into the fold. In this story of life, love, and loss they find strength in their friendship and through laughter they will overcome their deepest fear of death to celebrate new life.

The show is directed by Brie Michaels, celebrating 40 years as a director and actor with the company. “Directing Steel Magnolias has been one of the greatest pleasures of my 35-year directing career. From the first read-through, these six actresses have bonded and formed a sisterhood that has given us all many hours of laughter and friendship,” stated Michaels. Brie Michaels first joined LTC in 1978, marking this year as her 40th anniversary, and has acted and directed for the company ever since. Directing credits include Noises Off (cited by the Boulder Camera as one of the 10 best plays of the decade in the Denver area), The Foreigner, Jesus Christ Superstar, Dearly Departed, and The Diary of Anne Frank, to name just a few. Michaels has been the recipient of numerous acting and directing TARA awards over the years.

Steel Magnolias has been performed all over the U.S. and in Ireland, Japan, Poland, and Sweden. In 1989, it was adapted from the stage to the screen; the star-studded film launched Julia Roberts’ prolific acting career. The show runs three week-ends: February 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17 at 7:30 pm and February 4, 11 at 2:00 pm. For tickets, visit www.longmonttheatre.org.

Celebrating 61 years of live community theatre, the Longmont Theatre Company began in 1957 as a fund-raising committee for the then-new Longmont United Hospital. The volunteer troupe went on to become known as Longmont’s Potpourri Players. In 1991, they purchased the Trojan Theatre, a movie theater at 513 Main Street, and became the Longmont Theatre Company, operating from the Longmont Performing Arts Center.
