A home in the 7,000 block of Durham Circle experienced an explosion in the basement, causing a fire. The bomb squad was called in to investigate.

On Sunday, residents of the home reported a fire after hearing a small explosion from their basement. Upon arrival at the residence, first responders saw smoke coming from the basement.

First responders discovered what appeared to be explosive devices in the basement of the home, according to a news release from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. Several neighboring properties were forced to evacuate.

All emergency personnel exited the house for safety reasons. Later, firefighters were able to enter the home to locate the fire and extinguish it.

The residents of the home, including their pets, were able to evacuate safely. No one was injured in the fire or explosion, according to Carrie Haverfield, the public information specialist for Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.

The neighboring properties were then allowed to return as well.

A search warrant was executed at the property  and the Boulder County Regional Bomb Squad and the Boulder County Regional Hazmat Team were dispatched to the property and remain on-scene to dispose of any potentially dangerous materials.

The residents of the home have been cooperative with first responders. This case is currently still under investigation, according to Haverfield. Investigators who are on-scene will determine if a crime has been committed and if any charges are appropriate, Haverfield said.

This story is ongoing and will be updated as more information is released.
