The Boulder County Coroner’s Office has identified the boy who died in a shooting and resulting car crash on March 24 in Longmont.

Robert Maldonado, 16, was the victim at a “car meet up” near the Twin Peaks Square Shopping Center. Police have not shared updates on the investigation into his death or any suspects since Saturday.

A GoFundMe page in Maldonado’s memory described him as a “sweet, respectful and handsome young man who had his entire life ahead of him.” More than $8,000 had been donated to support his family as of Friday.

“The family is grieving and struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of their beloved son,” the page said.

According to information released by police last Saturday, officers responded to a call regarding shots fired around 9 p.m. March 24. The officer identified a suspect vehicle at the car meet up and tried to stop it, at which point a backseat passenger exited the car and ran.

Shortly after that, the communications center received a call that a vehicle struck a pole at Nelson Road and Hover Street. Officers determined that the driver, Maldonado, had been shot.

He was transported to the local hospital and died of his injuries, police said.

Police stated on Saturday that they had identified a suspect of interest and were following up on leads. No charges have been filed at the time.

Any witnesses who were in the immediate area or had video, and have yet to speak to police, are asked to email Detective Daniel Kilian at [email protected] or call (303)774-3693. Please reference Longmont Police Report #23-2740.
