A verbal dispute between cousins ended when one of them was shot and killed yesterday in Longmont.

At approximately 3:35 p.m., members of the Longmont Police and Longmont Fire Departments responded to a call about a shooting that had occurred inside a townhouse in the 1400 block of Red Mountain Drive.

When authorities arrived on the scene, they learned that two males in their 20s, who were also cousins, had been engaged in a verbal altercation when one retrieved a ".22 caliber AR style rifle" and shot at the other multiple times, according to a Longmont police report. The suspect fled the area prior to police’s arrival.

According to the police report, the cousins argued for days about the cleanliness of a room in the house. The suspect is reported to have experienced recent housing troubles, among other things, forcing him to stay with relatives.

Officers found the victim in the basement of the townhome where he suffered from multiple gunshot wounds. The officers rendered medical aid to the victim until an ambulance arrived and transported him to a nearby hospital.

The police report stated that the victim and another individual were smoking marijuana in the basement when the suspect approached them and shot the victim, leaving the other person uninjured.

The victim was non-responsive to the medical aid provided by first responders and was pronounced dead within an hour of arriving at the hospital.

The police, later, located the suspect’s vehicle in the 1000 block of Main Street. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Boulder County Jail where he was booked on a charge for murder in the first degree, according to the police report.

The identity of the deceased victim will be released by the Boulder County Coroner’s Office when it is appropriate, said Robin Ericson, the communications and marketing manager for Longmont Police Department. For now, his name is being withheld.

Anyone who may have information about this incident is asked to contact the Longmont Police Department at 303-651-8501 and refer to #22-2430.
