Longmont police are investigating a Friday night shooting that killed one boy.

At about 9 p.m. Friday, the Longmont Emergency Communications Center received a call regarding shots fired near the Twin Peaks Square Shopping Center at 800 South Hover, Longmont Public Safety Spokesperson Robin Ericson said. An officer arrived on the scene to a large crowd of bystanders attending a "car meet up," according to Ericson.

The officer identified a suspect vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle, at which point a backseat passenger exited the car and ran, Ericson said. Additional officers arrived and detained the other juvenile occupants of the vehicle.

Shortly after that, the communications center received a call that a vehicle struck a pole at Nelson and Hover. Upon arriving, officers determined that the juvenile driver of the vehicle had been shot.

The boy was transported to the local hospital and died of his injuries, Ericson said. No additional information will be released about the victim pending family notification.

She said the Longmont police has identified a suspect of interest and continues to follow up on leads. The investigation is ongoing.

The juveniles in the vehicles were interviewed and released to guardians. No charges have been filed against them at this time, according to Ericson.

Any witnesses who were in the immediate area or had video, and have yet to speak to police, are asked to email Detective Daniel Kilian at daniel.kilian@longmontcolorado.gov or call (303)774-3693. Please reference Longmont Police Report #23-2740.
