A judge set bond for Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa for $100,000,000 for his alleged involvement in a shooting spree on March 22, 2021, in a King Soopers grocery store on South Table Mesa Drive in Boulder.

After the shooting, Alissa was found mentally incompetent to stand trial. After months of debating his competency, he was found competent in August.

A preliminary hearing was held on Tuesday to determine whether probable cause was sufficient to take the case to trial.

Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty called the city of Boulder Detective Sarah Cantu its only witness. Cantu is the lead detective in the investigation of the March 22, 2021 incident.

Cantu walked the court through the day's harrowing events, detailing the actions and placement of the individuals involved.

Judge Ingrid Bakke determined that there was evidence to justify probable cause. She set Alissa’s bond at $100 million and required that he surrender his passport, not have contact with the victims or their families and insisted that if Alissa should make bail he be subject to electronic home monitoring.

The court also accepted Alissa’s plea of Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity. Bakke ordered that Alissa be evaluated by the state hospital by Jan. 8. A status conference for the evaluation was scheduled for Jan. 12.

The court and attorneys have given a tentative date Aug. 5 for jury selection with the trial potentially starting on Aug. 12. The District Attorney’s office expects three weeks will be needed to complete the trial.
