A grand jury indictment has charged a juvenile in the death of Robert Maldonado — the young man who died from a single gunshot wound and crashed into a pole at the corner of Nelson Road and Hover Street on March 24.

The juvenile — who is described as a repeat and violent juvenile offender — faces nine charges for the incident on March 24. Those charges include first-degree murder in the death of Maldonado, second degree murder, menacing, carrying a concealed weapon and two counts of possession of a handgun by a juvenile, according to the grand jury indictment released by the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office on Friday.

Maldondo and the defendant are said to have been at a car meetup in the parking lot located at 800 S. Hover St. An assault preceded the shooting according to witness statements and video footage acquired during the investigation. Video from the incident revealed that four shots were fired into the air and a fifth shot was fired later.

Maldonado was shot with what investigators believe to be a .38, .357 or a 9 mm gun causing a fatal wound. Maldonado left the scene in a truck that later crashed into a pole at the corner of Nelson Road and Hover Street. He was found unresponsive in the truck and was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Two 9 mm casings were found in the parking lot during the investigation.

The grand jury indictment concluded there was motive for murder based on evidence of the assault that took place prior to the shooting.

“The tragic murder of Robert Maldonado was devastating for his loved ones and the community. The Longmont Police Department and our prosecution team will continue working closely to secure justice in connection with this murder,” DA Michael Dougherty said in a statement to the Times-Call.
