Earlier today, Longmont Police assisted the Mead Police Department after a report that a 36-year-old man was headed to Longmont to harm family members.

The man was driving a white Silverado pickup when Longmont officers encountered him around 11:30 a.m. today. He was headed to Longmont from Mead when emergency vehicles attempted to stop him.

Instead of stopping, the man held a handgun to his head. Longmont officers followed the man through town until successfully deflating his tires near 19th Avenue and Main Street.

The man continued to drive north on Main Street and then east on Hwy. 66 where his vehicle careened off the road just east of the railroad tracks, according to the police report.

Police officers closed both directions of traffic after the man left his vehicle and once again pointed the gun to his head.

Officers established a perimeter and began negotiating with the man, attempting to deescalate the situation, according to the police report.

Negotiations seemed to be working when the man placed the gun on the rear tire of the vehicle, however, after being asked to surrender the man once again reached for the gun.

Police officers shot the man with two less-lethal beanbag rounds, striking him in the stomach and the hand, fracturing his hand, according to the police report.

After being struck with the beanbag rounds and being threatened that police would unleash the K-9 dog the man surrendered and was arrested without further incident, states the police report.

The man was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. He will be taken to Boulder County Jail upon release where he will face charges of felony menacing, DUI, prohibited use of a weapon, — the possession of a weapon while intoxicated — possession of a firearm by a previous offender and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
