Longmont police began an investigation of fraud after a Longmont woman was contacted about a television delivery.

A woman reported to police that she had received a text message which said that she was being shipped a television. The same text message prompted her to reply back if this was not correct.

The woman, who had not ordered a television, called the number that had sent her the text message to dispute being charged for the television.

The person who answered the call told the woman that, in order to resolve the charge, she must go to a Bitcoin ATM and insert her debit card, where she would receive a refund for the television of $1,250, according to a Longmont police report.

The woman followed the instructions but, when she inserted her debit card in the Bitcoin ATM, the suspect removed $1,250 from her account.

Police began an investigation into the incident but don’t expect that they will get an answer about the identity of the scammer, according to Detective Stephen Desmond with the Longmont Police, due to the nature of cryptocurrency which makes it difficult to track.
