At approximately 10:30 p.m. on Sunday near the Boulder County Fairgrounds, an altercation, involving a torque-wrench, between two people left one man severely wounded.

According to Detective Commander Eric Hulett at the Longmont Police Department, video surveillance of an altercation between two men at the Boulder County Fairgrounds shows an exchange of words between two individuals, one of whom has been identified as James Vialpando.

The video shows the unidenified man holding a torque wrench in a threatening way over Vialpando, according to Hulett. In the next moments, Vialpando gained control over the wrench and beat the other man with it. Hulett said the video showed the unidentified man seemingly instigated the altercation.

“We’re not sure what they were fighting about,” Hulett said, “ but two people got in a fight and one lost badly.”

When the Longmont Police Department arrived on the scene at nearly 11:00 p.m., the unidentified man had significant injuries from the torque-wrench. Officers quickly located Vialpando near the scene and arrested him, Hulett said. Vialpando suffered some minor injuries, according to Hulett.

Both the men were transported to a nearby hospital, where the unidentified man is still unconscious. Vialpando was taken to the Boulder County Jail on suspicion of first-degree assault and felony menacing.

Vialpando has been released on a $20,000 bond and will face formal charges today.
