Man drove tow truck into concrete poles outside Greeley Police Station

Only two people sustained minor injuries

On Monday, Weld County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 37-year-old man for stealing a tow truck and ramming it into concrete poles outside the Greeley Police Department headquarters.

The man stole the tow truck around 8 a.m. on Monday. Police suspect the man was under the influence of narcotics when he stole the truck, according to a Facebook post by the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.

“As deputies responded to the scene, Weld County dispatch received numerous calls about a tow truck crashing into moving and non-moving objects, including other vehicles, as it drove north toward Greeley,” officials stated in the post.

Upon entering downtown Greeley, the man continued to crash into oncoming vehicles after driving the wrong lane, officials stated.

The suspect arrived at the Greeley Police station where two officers were headed for their personal vehicles, the post states. The man struck one of the officers, narrowly missing the second.

The man then drove the tow truck into the control panel of the gate guarding the Greeley police’s secure parking lot, disabling the truck, according to the post.

He then exited the truck and ran toward the building, trying to gain access into the police department but was detained before he could enter.

The man and one victim were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, the post states.

He was later taken to the Weld County Jail where he faces charges of five counts of attempted first-degree assault, one count of aggravated motor vehicle theft, one count of criminal mischief and one count of violating the terms of his parole, all felonies, as well as one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence, according to the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident is still under investigation.
